Sun Safe Tips

Ways to protect yourself from the sun!

  1. Use sunscreens as part of your overall sun smart behavior.  Avoid peak hours of the day when the sun rays are the strongest, seek shade, and wear sun protective clothing.
  2. Choose a Broad Spectrum sunscreen that protects your skin from both UVA and UVB rays, has a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 30 or higher, and is water resistant up to 40 to 80 minutes.
  3. Be mindful of about the practically of sunscreen use for your specific acitivity. Every sunscreen product requires re-application at least every two hours, and some may require reapplication more frequently depending on activity level, sweating or frequency of contact with water, and elevation. High altitude activities may require more frequent re-application and a higher SPF sunscreen. 
  4. Take the time to apply enough of the sunscreen product and thoroughly blend it in. It is well know that people use sunscreen incorrectly, leading to decreased efficacy and a false sense of protection.
  5. Physical sunscreens that are zinc oxide based work best and are the safest. Zinc oxide is inert, and the best physical blocking sunscreen active ingredient that protects against both UVA and UVB rays, and is ideal for sensitive skin.
  6. Consumers that are skeptical about sunscreen use and the safety of  sunscreen products they are using can refer two outstanding resources available to consumers:
    (1). California Safe Cosmetics Act Program Database: Allows consumers to look up the safety of ingredients used in sunscreens and cosmetics: https://safecosmetics.cdph.ca.gov/search/
